'Car free day' failure no surprise - Crowe

22 September, 2005

Commenting on the total failure of 'European car free day' in Dublin Sinn Féin spokesperson on transport Seán Crowe TD called on the Minister to take their responsibilities seriously and take urgent action to address the public‚s utter lack of faith in public transport.

"A recent survey has revealed that most of the 70% of Irish workers who use their car to travel to work are un-deterred by rising fuel costs and would never abandon their cars for public transport. Amazingly only 21% chose free public transport as a solution to congestion. When you look at this alongside the complete failure of European car-free day in Dublin today the public‚s lack of confidence in public transport becomes clear.

"The failure of the 'car free day' is down is down to the fact that many people don‚t see public transport as a realistic option for their busy lives. To make 'car free day' work we need to see a safe, reliable and reasonably priced public transport service and that will only happen when the Minister seriously addresses the funding deficit in public transport. The Minister needs to take his responsibilities seriously and take urgent action to address the public‚s utter lack of faith in public transport." ENDS
