Rural Ireland can wait is the Budget message – Kenny

10 October, 2018 - by Martin Kenny TD

Sinn Féin TD for Sligo, Leitrim, North Roscommon and South Donegal Martin Kenny TD said today that even after a day re-reading Budget 2019, there is one clear message from the Budget and that is: rural Ireland can wait.

Speaking in his constituency today, Deputy Kenny said:

“There is no one in rural Ireland celebrating that Budget today. There is no expecting any great improvement in the quality of their lives as a result of this Budget.

“There is no one expecting the thousands of young people who left their home place to study in our cities or abroad and who never came back to start returning now, as a result of this Budget.

“Their departure was not some cultural or lifestyle choice; it is a result of neglect of the needs of rural-dwellers and a result of the policies that have made it harder and harder to enjoy what should be the benefits of living in a rural area, near to family and friends in the place you grew up.

“This Budget needed to send a clear message that the neglect and deprivation of resources and services to rural Ireland would stop, now. It didn’t and we are still waiting for the necessary investment in rural infrastructure; post offices, public services, garda stations and gardaí, tourism promotion, education and above all, broadband, the lack of which has us hamstrung.

“Rural Ireland can wait – again, is the message the government sent us yesterday and it is only a change of government that will turn the tide for rural people in this state.”
