EU must hold firm on backstop - David Cullinane TD
Sinn Féin spokesperson for Brexit David Cullinane TD has today called on the EU to keep to the terms of the backstop and not to allow the internal squabbles of the Tory Party to negate the needs of the people of the island of Ireland.
Deputy Cullinane said:
"The Brexit talks are in disarray. The hard right of the Tory Party, in tandem with the DUP, are pushing to scupper the backstop and inflict a hard border on the island of Ireland.
"The EU and the Irish government must not allow this to happen.
"Theresa May's government wants the EU to take a leap of faith.
"They want to make the backstop time-limited, saying that the future trade agreement will negate its purpose.
"However, the purpose of the backstop is to act as a guarantee in the event of no trade deal.
"The time for a leap of faith is over.
"The Good Friday Agreement must be protected in all its parts; the rights of Irish and EU citizens in the north must be protected; and there must be no hardening of the border on the island of Ireland.
"I call on the EU and the Irish government to stick to these goals and to ensure that the backstop is not time-limited in any form or fashion.
"The people of the north did not vote for Brexit, and this needs to be respected."
