Everyone should be able to attend school without discrimination - Mullan

16 October, 2018 - by Karen Mullan

Sinn Féin MLA Karen Mullan has said everyone should be able to attend school without discrimination.

The party’s education spokesperson was speaking after a Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) Tribunal ruled that a pupil with autism was constructively excluded from a Belfast special school.

Karen Mullan said:

“The impact of this exclusion will have far-reaching consequences not only for the child but for the child's family as well.

“Everyone should be able to attend school without the fear of discrimination.

“We are already acutely aware of the educational inequalities experienced by children with special educational needs and so is the Education Authority. It it is unacceptable that this situation was ever allowed to occur.

“The school and the Education Authority should ensure that necessary adjustments are made so no other child will have to experience this.

“Sinn Féin is committed to tackling discrimination and inequality in society and it is incumbent on all public bodies to play a leading role in ending all forms of discrimination.”
