More LIS funding ‘badly needed’ – Kenny
Speaking in Leinster House today, Sinn Féin Rural Affairs spokesperson Martin Kenny TD, who was attending the Rural and Community Affairs Joint Oireachtas Committee, said that more money is needed for the Local Improvement Schemes.
Deputy Kenny, who represents Sligo, Leitrim, North Roscommon and South Donegal, said:
“The Local Improvement Schemes (LIS) is to help people living in rural areas to resurface roadways approaching their homes.
“Severe weather conditions can play havoc with the surfacing on small country roads and, until the instigation of this scheme, it was up to the people living along it to pay for resurfacing.
“The LIS gives them some help and I am glad to hear Minister Ring say that he is considering giving more money to this scheme.
“There is huge need for this due to county councils lacking funding to carry out proper maintenance of small roads.”
