No excuse in this day and age that people have to endure poverty - Maskey
Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has said there is an onus on everyone to ensure that all children, all families and all communities have the right to live free from poverty.
Speaking on International Day of the Eradication of Poverty the party’s anti–poverty and welfare spokesperson said:
“Today is also an opportunity to talk about the stubborn rates of poverty and destitution which blight Irish society.
“Poverty is a grinding reality in many people’s lives and impacts on everything from educational attainment to community cohesion and prosperity, health outcomes and life expectancy.
“There is simply no excuse in this day and age that people have to endure poverty.
“There is an onus on all of us to ensure that all children, all families and all communities have the right to live free from poverty.
“The causes of poverty and deprivation are numerous. Many of them have their roots in ideologically driven austerity policies imposed by a Tory government as well as the legacy of past discrimination and underinvestment.
“Those interested in meaningful change must stand up to a rotten economic system that has left so many behind, and fight for a better society founded on equality, solidarity and universal rights.”
