Anderson to meet Barnier in Strasbourg
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson will meet with the EU's chief Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, in Strasbourg tomorrow.
Martina Anderson said:
"As the Brexit negotiations are in a crucial phase, I requested a meeting with the EU's chief Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, to impress on him the need for the EU to stand firm and protect the backstop.
"I will be meeting him tomorrow in Strasbourg to discuss the aftermath of last week's EU summit.
"The EU has been holding firm on the need to maintain the backstop and to ensure the Good Friday Agreement is protected in all its parts.
"At our meeting I will be stressing the need for the EU to maintain that position as negotiations continue.
"I will be making it clear that the DUP do not speak for the majority in the north and must not be allowed, through their axis with the Tories, to drive the economy of the north off a cliff.
"Given the chaos within Tory party and attempts to renege on whatever has been agreed in relation to the backstop, it is vital that the EU and the Irish government maintain its current stance and ensure the backstop is protected."
