"No place for racism or discrimination of any kind in our communities" - Archibald
Sinn Féin MLA Caoimhe Archibald has said there is no place for racism or discrimination of any kind in our communities.
The East Derry MLA said:
“Last week was Hate Crime Awareness Week which is an annual event raising awareness of crime against vulnerable groups.
”It's a very sad reality that racist hate crimes continue to be committed in our society.
“People living in the north of Ireland in particular EU migrant workers, ethnic minorities and those who have come to live and make the north their home have never felt more insecure regarding their vulnerability to hate crime.
"It is disappointing and concerning to hear of racism within our communities, and also to hear reports that since the referendum on leaving the EU, those from ethnic minorities have reported increased hostility and racist incidents.
"There is a duty on us all to tackle racism and discrimination in our communities and workplaces by challenging negative comments and behaviour.
"Due to the lack of equality legislation the North will faces challenges in combating racism. Sinn Féin supports equality legislation to combat racism.”
