On Tuesday 23rd October, the European Parliament will vote on the Drinking Water Directive and includes the official response to the EU Wide petition, Right2Water which called for water to be recognized as a human right.
Speaking from Strasbourg, Sinn Féin MEP for Dublin Lynn Boylan said
“The Right2Water petition collected nearly 2 million signatures and it had a simple demand, that the EU recognize that water is a human right.
"Across the EU, water poverty is increasing and cut offs happen daily.
“In 2015, a report negotiated by me endorsed the demands of the petition. Tomorrow MEPs have an opportunity to vote for legally binding measures but already MEPs from the right wing group EPP, of which Fine Gael are members are trying to delete any reference to ensuring access to water.
“Together with other progressive MEPs, I have submitted amendments to strengthen the obligations on Member States to provide access to water to their citizens.
"I have ensured that these votes will be roll call votes so that the 2 million people who signed the petition and the hundreds of thousands who marched in Ireland will be able to see exactly where the Irish MEPs stand on the human right to water."
