Minister Ross needs to ‘cool his jets’ and focus on what Dublin Airport actually needs – Imelda Munster TD
Sinn Féin spokesperson for Transport Imelda Munster TD has today cautioned Minister for Transport Shane Ross against developing public amenities to satisfy private interests.
The report into expansion of airports has yet to be published by government despite being extensively quoted in the media today.
Speaking on this, Deputy Munster expressed concern that Dublin airport expansion plans were being conducted to appease private lobbyists and business, rather than prioritising the requirements of the airport and the general public.
Deputy Munster said:
“For decades there has been a lobby that is eager to run a third terminal at Dublin airport.
“Minister Ross has been privatising public services since he took office, and I have concerns that the Minister would be involved in developing a plan on the back of private interests rather than the needs of the public.
“These expansion plans were not included in Ireland 2040, which leads me to wonder how much planning and consideration is going into this proposal.
“If numbers going through the airport are set to increase dramatically then of course we need to consider all infrastructural requirements to deal with that demand, however a third terminal at this time would not appear to be an immediate priority.
“Several stakeholders have said that a third terminal is not required at present. We need to take all relevant opinions on board.
“I would be inclined to ask the Minister to deliver on more immediate projects, such as a second runway, and other infrastructure which is currently needed at Dublin airport.
“The Minister does struggle with his brief, and he always fails to prioritise projects appropriately. I think his ideological obsession with impressing private business interests has taken over here.
“He needs to cool the jets and focus on the immediate needs of the airport.”
