Denise Mitchell TD welcomes Government decision on former Mother and Baby Home site at Tuam
Sinn Féin spokesperson on Children and Youth Affairs Denise Mitchell TD has welcomed the decision by the Minister to opt for the forensic excavation of the site of the former Mother and Baby Home in Tuam, County Galway.
Responding to the announcement this afternoon, Deputy Mitchell said:
“This is a very important decision.
“The State has an obligation to investigate the causes of the death of those buried at Tuam as well as ensuring that the bodies are returned to their families for burial.
“Many of the relatives of those buried at Tuam are rightly very concerned by the likelihood that some of the remains may never be identified.
"I hope the Government will to do all it can to ensure that whatever resources necessary are made available to help respectfully recover and identify these remains at the site.
“I trust that the Minister will continue to liaise closely with families, relatives, campaigners and local residents as the work progresses.
“I also hope that this is the beginning of a process and that we will see similar steps taken to investigate, locate and recover remains from other sites in a timely manner.”
