Sheehan welcomes prototype elective care centres announcement

23 October, 2018 - by Pat Sheehan

Sinn Féin Spokesperson for Health Pat Sheehan MLA has welcomed the announcement by the Department of Health this evening of the location of prototype elective care centres in the north for treatment of cataracts and varicose veins.

The elective care centres for varicose veins will be based at Lagan Valley Hospital and Omagh Hospital and Primary Care Complex; and the centres for cataracts will be Mid-Ulster Hospital, Downe Hospital and South Tyrone Hospital.

Speaking after the announcement Pat Sheehan commented:

"I welcome The Department’s announcement this evening on the introduction of elective care centres.

"Elective care centres, if successful, can ensure that elective care procedures are not disrupted by increasing pressures elsewhere in the system, such as those in winter time, and that relatively minor but important procedures can be completed on time.

"These centres are in line with the direction set by the previous Health Minister, Michelle O'Neill's, Delivering Together plan and Elective Care Plan.

"The centres have potential to make a significant impact on cataract and varicose veins waiting lists moving forward.

"It is important that these prototypes get underway before the end of the year as committed to by the department and that the delivery of elective care in these centres are monitored to measure its effectiveness.

"Important learning must be taken from these prototype elective care centres in looking to how deliver elective care services and tackle long waiting lists moving forward."
