Onus is on the State to right the wrongs of Tuam and other homes – Mary Lou McDonald TD

23 October, 2018 - by Mary Lou McDonald TD

Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald TD has this afternoon welcomed the decision to carry out a forensic excavation of the site of the former Mother and Baby Home in Tuam.

The Dublin Central TD said:

“I welcome the decision of Minister Zappone to opt for a forensic excavation of the site.

"This is the right course of action for the government to take in acknowledging and dealing with the grievous hurt inflicted on generations of women and their families.

"It is a tribute to activists such as Catherine Corless, survivors and their families that the government has now acted.

"There is an onus on the State to right the wrongs, to excavate the site and respectfully recover and identify remains.

"Babies and their mothers cannot and must not be forgotten.

"Their suffering must be acknowledged, the truth and scale of their abuse exposed and their must babies given the recognition and respect denied to them in their short lives. The government should extend the process to other sites.”
