Brexit will damage small business and construction sector – Ó Muilleoir

24 October, 2018 - by Máirtín Ó Muilleoir

Sinn Féin MLA Máirtín Ó Muilleoir has said the impact of Brexit will have a damaging impact on small businesses in the north.

Máirtín Ó Muilleoir said:

"Small businesses in the north are among the largest employers and much of their business depends on the ability to carry out cross-border trade and, as such, they are particularly at risk from the impact of the Tory Brexit.

"The latest report from the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) shows that small firms involved in the construction sector could be hit worst.

"It shows that the pace of growth has already slowed and that the cost of materials has risen significantly.

"Alarmingly, it also found that more than two thirds of small construction firms have reported they are struggling to hire trades people.

"Undoubtedly Brexit is a factor in these concerns, particularly given the uncertainty around the rights of workers from other EU states post-Brexit.

"This, together with a slew of previous reports from a range of sectors, highlights the need for the north to remain in the customs union and single market and for that to happen the backstop must be maintained and protected."
