Hain urged to focus on regeneration measures for Strabane

28 September, 2005

Sinn Féin West Tyrone MP Pat Doherty has urged British Secretary of State Peter Hain to focus on regeneration measures for Strabane. During an intensive hour-long meeting with Mr Doherty sought government backing for two specific economic development projects for Strabane and a comprehensive package of other regeneration measures for the District.

Mr Doherty described the meeting with Mr Hain at the Labour Party Conference as focussed and constructive. After the meeting Mr Doherty said:

"I requested this meeting with Mr Hain prior to the Conference to discuss the economic situation in Strabane and to lobby for a package of regeneration measures and government backing for two specific economic development projects.

"I also presented Mr Hain with a detailed socio-economic profile of the District highlighting the massive areas of socio-economic disadvantage.

"Given the recent discourse about the need for government intervention to assist areas of multi-deprivation and especially given the huge job losses from key employers in the local economy in Strabane, I urged Mr Hain to prioritise a substantial regeneration measures for the area.

"Mr Hain said that he would take on board the case I made and I look forward to an early response from him on all the issues I raised. I also asked Mr Hain to come to Strabane at the earliest possible date to appraise himself of the situation first hand.

"It is essential that all local representatives work together to add strength to the case that is being made." ENDS
