Irish government must ensure no hard border - Anderson
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson the Irish government must ensure it lives up to its pledge that there will be no hard border on the island of Ireland.
Martina Anderson said:
"Previously we have heard An Taoiseach tell us that there will not be a hard border on the island of Ireland as a result of Brexit.
"Now we have reports that the south has stepped up its plans for such a border with scoping exercises of state owned-land for possible checkpoints.
"The priority of the Irish government should be to ensure there is no hard Brexit border anywhere on the island, either at the existing border or anywhere else.
"Contingency planning to the contrary is basically doing the work of Theresa May and the Brexiteers for them.
"We need to see the Irish government holding its position and redoubling efforts to ensure the backstop is protected and there is no imposition of a hard Brexit border on the island."
