Sinn Féin Leader meets with Garda Commissioner Drew Harris
Sinn Féin Leader Mary Lou McDonald TD has today met with Garda Commissioner Drew Harris to discuss policing, community safety and supporting victims.
Speaking after the meeting Mary Lou McDonald TD said,
“The new Garda Commissioner faces significant challenges in rebuilding public confidence in the senior leadership of An Garda Síochána.
“The appointment of a new Commissioner and the recommendations of the Commission on future of policing have given an opportunity for the issues of the past, and a plan for the future of An Garda Síochána, to be addressed.
“At the meeting I raised the concerns of addressing the needs of victims of the conflict whilst also encouraging the Commissioner to meet directly with these groups.
“The victims of Dublin/Monaghan bombing and the victims of British Collusion, like all victims of conflict, deserve truth justice and support.
“We discussed the need for greater accountability at a senior and local level to continue to enhance community safety, build good practice and safeguard communities.
“I know from my own constituency the differences that investment in community policing can make and that work needs to continue.
“In addition we raised the issue of tackling domestic and gender violence and the need to roll out the new approaches being piloted by An Garda Síochána.
“Today’s meeting was positive and productive.”
