DUP wreckers want to turn the clock back - Hazzard

1 November, 2018 - by Chris Hazzard

Sinn Féin MP Chris Hazzard said the greatest obstacle to LGBTQ equality is the short-sighted and self-serving pact between the Tory government and the DUP.

Speaking in London at the “LGBT Equality & Ireland - Past and Present” event at Westminster, the South Down MP said:

“The Good Friday Agreement makes clear that there must be an equivalence of protection of rights on the island of Ireland north and south and that ultimate responsibility for rights and equality lies with the two governments who are the co-guarantors of the Agreement.

“Sinn Féin have told Theresa May and the Leo Varadkar that in the absence of the political institutions that the default for the delivery of rights is the British-Irish Intergovernmental Conference.

“Of course the greatest obstacle to equality is the short-sighted and self-serving pact between the Tory government and the DUP.

“So the lesson is clear for the people of Ireland north and south but crucially also for the people of Britain.

“The intolerance, disrespect and lack of integrity displayed by the DUP have wrecked the devolved Assembly in Belfast. The DUP wreckers are now focused on turning the clock back in Britain.

“So I would urge vigilance here in Britain. A party with a long history of sectarianism, racism, homophobia and misogyny is at the centre of political decision making in London.”
