5 November, 2018

Sinn Féin this evening selected two candidates to contest the upcoming council elections in the Court District Electoral Area for Belfast City Council.

The Court DEA area covers a large section of the Falls, Grosvenor, Springfield and Shankill Roads.

At a selection convention held on the Falls Road, party members selected sitting councillor Claire Canavan and new candidate Christina Black as the party’s Court DEA candidates for the election which will be held on Thursday 2nd May 2019.

Speaking after the selection convention, Councillor Claire Canavan said:

“We are proud and honoured to have been selected by party members to go forward for Ard Chomhairle ratification to contest the council elections in the Court DEA next May.

“We have a strong party organisation in the Court DEA, and a council team with a great blend of youth and experience.

“We are delighted that Christina Black has been selected as a candidate, alongside myself, at tonight’s convention.

“Christina has worked in this community for over 20 years and brings enormous experience and commitment to this area.

“Christina manages a vibrant, multi-purpose and welcoming facility in the Falls and lives in the area.

“She is passionate about community engagement and is engaged in a number of partnership initiatives related to economic, social, educational, cultural and environmental development.

“Christina believes strongly that the growth of this city must benefit local communities, enabling socially

conscious development, accompanying infrastructure and economic support.

“The Sinn Féin council team in this area has delivered consistently for citizens.

“We have worked hard on the ground, in conjunction with our outstanding community leaders, and we are proud to be part of a team that strives to increase investment, create more jobs and make this part of Belfast an even better place to live.

“The Sinn Féin Belfast council group will continue to stand strongly against Brexit and those who supported it, and the devastating consequences which Brexit threatens to bring on our communities and on ordinary people.

“We will also continue to battle against the denial of citizens’ rights, on the Irish language, on legacy issues, on LGBT rights and marriage equality, and on our national rights.

“Sinn Féin has delivered and we will continue to deliver and stand up for all the citizens of Belfast.”
