Hardy slams new Irish language snub

6 November, 2018 - by Pátrice Hardy

Sinn Féin Councillor Patrice Hardy has hit out at unionist members of Mid and East Antrim Council for again refusing to fund events as part of Seachtain na Gaeilge.

Patrice Hardy commented: “Despite all the controversy over the previous refusal to fund Seachtain na Gaeilge or even to engage with the Irish language community to discuss this, it appears that some members of the council have learned nothing.

“The unionist parties again refused to even countenance the request from Conradh na Gaeilge or to even bring back a report to discuss.

“It has already been established that Conradh na Gaeilge suffered reputational damage as a result of the Council Chief Executive’s comments last year and this is a further snub to the Irish language community in this council area and will only add to the insult caused by the previous controversy.

“Seachtain na Gaeilge is a hugely positive, global event which this council should be supporting rather than snubbing. The Irish language community aren’t seeking special treatment, they are only seeking equality.”
