Kearney to attend to GUE/NGL leadership meeting in Brussels
Sinn Féin National Chairperson, Declan Kearney, is today attending a GUE/NGL leadership meeting in Brussels.
The conference brings together the leaderships of the political parties, which make up the GUE/NGL (European United Left/Nordic Green Left) grouping in the European Parliament.
Speaking on arrival in Brussels, the South Antrim MLA said:
"This meeting brings together the leaderships of the 20 political parties which make up the GUE/NGL grouping.
“Leadership representatives from Syriza, Eh Bildu, Podemos, Sinn Féin, AKEL Die Linke and many others will discuss the work of the group within the EU parliament and the potential for maximising our strength in progressing a positive agenda in building a Europe of Equals.
“I commend the GUE/NGL group for this initiative which is both timely and of strategic value.
“The political direction, policy orientation and increasing need for reform of the European Union, coupled with, and often fuelling, the rise of the far right, present an existential threat to the principles of the progressive left.
“We know well that the only way to defeat a bad idea is to present a better one.
“The political leaders attending today’s meeting are essential to that.
“The universal values of international fraternity and solidarity; and, of equality and social justice are more relevant today than ever before.
“I look forward to this strategic engagement and to providing Sinn Féin’s analysis of how we create a better Europe for all."
