Anderson meets top Brexit civil servant in Brussels

7 November, 2018 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson met today with the top civil servant dealing with Brexit in the North at the European Parliament in Brussels.

Martina Anderson said:

"I met today with the Dr Andrew McCormick, the director of International Relations for Brexit of the civil service in the north in Brussels.

"It is clear the civil service are well aware of the dangers of the north crashing out of the EU and the impact it will have on our economy.

"But the reality is that, deal or no deal, there is no such thing as a good Brexit for the north. It will devastate our economy and put jobs at risk.

"It will also have undermine our rights and, while much attention has been paid to preparing for the impact of Brexit on trade, there also needs to be a focus on rights.

"Our rights cannot simply be dismissed as collateral damage to the Tory Brexit agenda.

"That is why a bespoke solution is required for the north. Not only does the backstop need to be maintained to allow the north to remain in the customs union and single market but it must also be expanded upon to include rights protections."
