Sinn Féin amendment on reviewing Carer’s Allowance accepted to Social Welfare Bill 2018 – John Brady TD
Sinn Féin spokesperson for Employment Affairs & Social Protection John Brady TD has welcomed cross party support for his Carer’s Allowance amendment to the Social Welfare Bill taken at Committee Stage this morning.
Teachta Brady said:
“Every day Carers in this State provide first class care for some of our most vulnerable citizens. Yet, issues they have raised particularly around the Carers Allowance payment have gone ignored by this Government.
“These issues were highlighted most recently in the Family Carers Ireland pre-Budget submission which the Minister received yet did not take account of in Budget 2019.
“My amendment here today commits the Minister to review the payment, the restriction on Carers to supplement their income due to the 15 hour rule, their access to the contributory State Pension and the barriers to the labour market hey face after a period in caring.
“I welcome the fact that this amendment has been accepted on the guarantee that I amend the timeframe for the report from the 3 months to 6 months which I am happy to do once the report is carried out.
“It is past time that this Government start listening to Carers and the concerns that they have in relation to this payment, this is just one issue that Carers face but it is one I believe that needs to be examined with the key stakeholders.”
