Withdrawal agreement safeguards must be fully respected - Mary Lou McDonald TD
Commenting today on the political declaration agreed between the EU and the British Government ahead of this weekend’s European Summit, Sinn Féin President, Mary Lou McDonald TD said;
“The political declaration of on the future relations between the EU and the British government sets the framework for the next round of negotiations.
“The people in the north voted against Brexit, as there is no good Brexit. The Withdrawal agreement remains a least worse option.
“It is crucial that the safeguards included in the withdrawal agreement are fully respected and given effect in any future relationship.
“The backstop as agreed must remain in place unless and until a better mechanism is agreed to protect our agreements, our economic interests and to avoid a hard border.
“It is a matter of concern that the framework does not confirm that the British Government will continue to be bound by the European Convention on Human Rights.
“The Good Friday Agreement is explicit in the incorporation of the ECHR into law for now and into the future. The refusal by the British government to commit to the ECRH is in direct contradiction of their commitment to safeguard the Good Friday Agreement in all its parts.
“The next round of negotiations cannot undermine the withdrawal agreement and must address the needs to fully safeguard the rights of citizens and the needs of our economy.”
