Ó Donnghaile urges support for Occupied Territories Bill
Sinn Féin Senator Niall Ó Donnghaile has welcomed legal advice which states that the ‘Occupied Territories Bill’ is fully compliant with EU trade rules.
Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s vote in the Seanad, Niall Ó Donnghaile said:
“This legal advice is welcome and further reiterates what we knew already, trade can be restricted because these settlements violate international law.
“The Occupied Territories Bill seeks to prohibit the import and sale of goods, services and natural resources originating land stolen from the Palestinian people.
“Ireland should not be importing goods and services that are only available because of gross human rights abuses, war crimes and disregard for international law.
“News earlier in the week that Airbnb will remove listings for properties located in the settlements is another step forward in the international BDS campaign. People are starting to listen.
“Our government must also listen and act - the time for lip service is over - they should support diplomatic and economic sanctions against the Israeli state.
“Sinn Féin are again voting for the Occupied Territories Bill in the Seanad and I would call on others who are serious about supporting peace, justice and the two-state solution to do the same.”
