Continued Waterford CAMHS post vacancies ‘a disgrace’ – Cullinane

26 November, 2018 - by David Cullinane TD

Sinn Féin TD for Waterford David Cullinane today lambasted the HSE for continued understaffing of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) at University Hospital Waterford, adding that the situation needs to rectified immediately.

Deputy Cullinane said:

“In response to a question I asked, the HSE confirmed that there is currently only one CAMHS consultant post filled in Waterford, with two posts vacant.

“This is despite the fact that Wexford CAHMS services have been subsumed into Waterford.

“We know of cases where children are being put into adult wards to cope with the understaffing.

“This is completely unacceptable.

“The HSE has responded to the situation by providing locum consultants at the weekends.

“This is hardly a long-term situation – although the HSE appears to be treating it as such.

“In addition, we have industrial action by psychiatric staff at University Hospital Waterford that is being fuelled in part by work conditions and the enormous strain staff are put under by having to work with severely limited resources.

“The HSE must stop treating University Hospital Waterford as an addendum to its national health strategy.

“Waterford and the South East deserve better.

“The HSE must fill these posts as a matter of urgency, and invest in services for the South East.”
