Sinn Féin urge broad-based anti-water charges campaign

3 October, 2005

Sinn Féin Mid Ulster MLA Francie Molloy welcoming the launch of Coalition against Water Charges petition has said that a broad-based coalition against the proposed water charges is the best way to achieve success.

Mr Molloy said:

"The reality is that the British government have failed to make the case for the introduction of water charges.

"The British government have failed to address the core issue. People here have paid for our water yet it is successive British direct rule administrations that have failed to invest this money in maintaining and developing our water infrastructure.

"The British government have also failed to demonstrate that the poorest and most vulnerable people will not be hit hardest by this form of taxation. Instead there will be more poverty.

"It is vital that everyone who is opposed to the imposition of water charges stand together in a broad-based coalition. This is the best way to stop the water taxes." ENDS
