McDonald extends solidarity to the people of Palestine
Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald TD has called on the Irish government to recognise the State of Palestine without further delay.
The Dublin Central TD said:
“Today is the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.
“'In recognition of this, Sinn Féin have organised nationwide events marking our on-going solidarity with the people of Palestine.
“Over seventy years ago, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were driven from their homes and their land. The injustice and tragic consequences of those actions continue to the present day.
“The international community has a responsibility to end this crisis and to support the cause of peace and establishment of Palestinian statehood.
“The Irish government must take the lead by immediately recognising the State of Palestine as approved by the Dáil over four years ago.
“This is long overdue. The time for stalling and heel dragging is over. This motion was an important act of international solidarity and it must be implemented without delay.
“For our part, on behalf of Sinn Féin and the people of Ireland, I would like to extend our continued support to the people of Palestine in their just quest for peace and Statehood.”
