‘Need for international solidarity on LGBTQ issues’ - Molloy

30 November, 2018 - by Francie Molloy

Sinn Féin MP Francie Molloy has said there is a need for international solidarity in the pursuit of equal rights for the LGBTQ community.

The Mid Ulster MP was speaking after meeting with Dr Mariela Castro, Cuban MP and director of the National Centre for Sex Education (CENESEX).

France Molloy said:

“I was delighted to meet with Dr Mariela Castro. Like her father Raúl, uncle Fidel, and mother Vilma Espín before her, she is an inspiration to freedom-loving people across the globe.

“We commended her work on championing the cause of equality, particularly for the LGBTQ community in Cuba.

"The inclusion of same-sex marriage into the new draft constitution for Cuba, which is currently undergoing public consultation is a major step forward in advancing LGBTQ equality.

“We spoke with Dr Castro on the current situation in Ireland, and in particular the continued denial of equal rights in the north of Ireland due to the intransigence of the DUP, supported by the British government.

“Sinn Féin are committed to marriage equality right across the island. Rights must be for everyone.”
