Break the stigma, know your status - Sheehan
Sinn Féin MLA Pat Sheehan has encouraged people to support the theme of this year’s World AIDS Day which is ‘know your status’ to encourage those in doubt to take the test for HIV/AIDS.
Speaking on World AIDS Day, the party’s Health spokesperson said:
“A recent report from the Public Health Agency showed that there are 1073 people in the north living with HIV.
"Taking a HIV test is a big step but the reality is that HIV can affect anybody regardless of gender, sexuality or age.
“Early diagnosis means earlier access to effective treatments which can reduce the virus in the body considerably.
“While significant progress has been made in terms of treatment for HIV it is imperative that we continue to challenge the stigma associated with it.
“I want to commend organisations and charities, and all those across Ireland today who are wearing a red ribbon to raise awareness of HIV and AIDS.
“If you are in any doubt, please visit your local GUM clinic or GP and take the free test.”
