McDonald leads Sinn Féin EU diplomatic offensive
Speaking in Brussels, receiving Politico’s European Leaders Class of 2019 Award, Mary Lou McDonald said,
“Today I met with Guy Verhofstadt, the European Parliament’s Brexit Coordinator.
“I impressed upon Guy the fact that, for Ireland, there is no such thing as a good Brexit, irrespective of whatever deal is struck.
“Brexit poses incalculable challenges for the island of Ireland and Sinn Féin have been dogged in their expression of these.
“To that end, we have embarked upon a diplomatic offensive in Europe, influencing officials in each European institution.
“We share the belief that this remains a crucial time for Ireland in Europe
“I informed Guy of the deficiencies of the Withdrawal Agreement, particularly in the field of citizens’ rights.
“While not a panacea, the Withdrawal Agreement does represent the least worse option.
“The ‘backstop’ is an essential part of the Withdrawal Agreement. The agreed ‘backstop’ represents a net through which the much-needed certainty for communities and businesses in Ireland cannot fall.
“There is much more work to be done. Uncertainty remains around the status of citizens’ rights and Sinn Féin will continue to work effectively to ensure the maximum level of protection for all.”
Mary Lou McDonald concluded:
“It is an honour to be awarded this recognition at a time of great challenge and change in Europe and Ireland.”
