Sinn Féin invite British Secretary of State to Strabane to discuss economic situation

4 October, 2005

The Sinn Féin Chairperson of Strabane District Council, Cllr Brian Mc Mahon has invited the British Secretary of State Peter Hain to come and meet with Council to discuss ways of turning the economic situation around in the District.

Cllr Mc Mahon said,

"Last week local Sinn Féin MP Pat Doherty held an hour long meeting with Mr Hain at the Labour Party Conference in Brighton discussing the economic situation in the District in the aftermath of a succession of major jobs losses from the textiles sector, the mainstay of the local economy.

"As well as lobbying the case for two specific economic projects, Mr Doherty also impressed upon the Mr Hain the need for a wide-ranging package of measures to be provided to engender economic growth in the District. He also asked Mr Hain to come to Strabane in person so to appraise himself of the economic situation.

"Mr Hain said that he would be prepared to come and meet with representatives on a cross party basis so as Council Chair I have now extended an invitation to him to come and meet with full Council at the earliest possible date so that we can spell out what we believe is required from his Administration to help turn the economic situation in the District around."
