‘Backstop most effective way to protect farmers’ - McAleer
Sinn Féin MLA Declan McAleer has welcomed confirmation from the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) that Payments have been issued to 97 percent of farm businesses in December 2018 and will continue to be rolled out during December.
The party’s Agriculture spokesperson said:
“I welcome that 97 percent of CAP Payments in December 2018 have now been made and I am hopeful that the remaining payments will be made by the end of the year.
“This is welcome for farmers who heavily rely on the Single Farm Payment to keep farms running.
“However, these are EU payments and the reckless Brexit agenda being pursued by the DUP has created great uncertainty with regard to future funding for farmers.
“Farmers have already felt the impact of the dark Brexit cloud, which is compounded by the removal of the ANC payment for hill farmers which will not be received from 2019.
"Sinn Féin will continue to fight the case for farmers. The backstop is the most effective way to protect our agri-food industry and must be remain the bottom line.”
