Agriculture sector would be devastated by no-deal Brexit - Gildernew

7 December, 2018 - by Michelle Gildernew

Sinn Féin MP Michelle Gildernew has said the agriculture sector in the north would be devastated by a no-deal Brexit which could result in an immediate end to CAP payments.

Michelle Gildernew said:

"The agriculture sector in the north has a well-earned reputation for excellence and is highly regarded across Europe and further afield.

"But the very existence of the sector is in jeopardy if there is a no deal Brexit which would see the north crash out of the EU.

"Under a no deal Brexit, Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) payments would cease immediately, putting the very livelihoods of our farmers at risk.

"With the DUP rejecting the Withdrawal Agreement they are abandoning the north's farmers to a no deal Brexit that would devastate the agricultural sector.

"The backstop is an insurance policy which avoids a hard Brexit border in order to allow our farmers to continue to trade north and south and to remain in the Customs Union and Single market. It must be maintained and protected."
