Karen Bradley's assurances a mess of contradictions - Anderson

8 December, 2018 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson said attempts by Karen Bradley to provide assurances over Brexit amount to nothing but a mess of contradictions.

Martina Anderson said;

“People right across society in the north have deep and genuine concerns about Brexit which will not be allayed by this attempt by Karen Bradley’s comments.

“While the backstop contained in the Withdrawal Agreement will avoid any physical infrastructure on the border and allow firms to keep trading, there is still no such thing as a good Brexit.

“Her letter also makes the ludicrous claim that there is no threat to the rights we enjoy today, which is simply not true.

“Our rights will be undermined and the first right to go will be the fundamental democratic right to representation in the European Parliament.

“The commitment to leaving the Common Agricultural Policy will provide no comfort to our farmers as few believe seriously this vital funding will be replaced by the British government.

“What we have from Karen Bradley in this letter is a mess of contradictions which once again highlights her lack of understanding of the realities on the ground in the north.

“Her government is still attempting to court the favour of the DUP who are clearly out of step with the majority of people in the north on Brexit and other issues.”
