Computer fiasco highlights need for Ministerial accountability
Commenting on the Health Service Executive's suspension of the PPARS computer system, Sinn Féin Dáil leader and Health spokesperson Caoimhghin Ó Caoláin said:
"The PPARS fiasco is comparable to the debacle of the PULSE system in the Garda Siochána. It is scandalous that money, which could and should have been spent on delivering front-line services for patients, has been wasted in this manner.
"The mismanagement which has led to the spending of €150 million on a computer system that does not work and is now to be put on hold, highlights the lack of accountability for our health services at Ministerial level. This is public money but the Minister for Health and Children will not be held accountable in the Dáil for this and other management failures in the health system because the 'management and delivery of health and personal social services' have been made the responsibility of the Health Service Executive. This and previous Ministers have taken credit for spending on the health services but act like Pontius Pilate when massive systems failures such as this occur." END
