Fury as schoolboy is left at side of road

4 October, 2005

Speaking today after it emerged that a 13-year-old schoolboy had been abandoned in the pouring rain on the side of a road because he had forgotten his bus ticket Sean Crowe Sinn Féin spokesperson on Education and Transport called on the Minister for Education to initiate an immediate investigation.

Speaking today deputy Crowe said, "Bus Éireann is now implementing a no ticket no travel policy due to the lack of space brought about by the implementation of new safety measures. The Minister had the entire summer to plan for this. This new policy has led to a situation where a 13-year-old child has been left on the side of the road.

"I am calling on the Minister of Education and Science Mary Hanafin to initiate an immediate investigation into this affair and establish new guidelines instructors to prevent a similar situation happening in the future. This is an unacceptable dilemma for any child, to be left with no money at the side of the road and with no means to contact his family. I call on the Minister to assure parents that a similar situation will not arise again." ENDS
