Growing increase in numbers of working poor ‘alarming’ – Brady
Sinn Féin spokesperson for Employment Affairs & Social Protection John Brady TD has raised concerns at the growing number of people with jobs living in poverty, according to the CSO Survey & Income Living Conditions figures released yesterday.
Raising the issue with the Taoiseach today, Teachta Brady said:
“There are now 109,000 people with jobs living in poverty. This figure represents the working poor in Ireland and it is on the rise.
“There are now over 4,000 more people with a job at risk of poverty today than there were 12 months ago. This is an alarming statistic that the Government need to acknowledge.
“This lies in stark contrast with the Taoiseach’s rhetoric that securing employment is the best route out of poverty. It clearly is not.
“It also flies in the face of An Taoiseach’s drivel about Fine Gael representing those that get up early in the morning. These workers get up early every morning, yet they live in poverty.”
