‘Statutory bodies have key role in improving prison healthcare’ - Flynn

19 December, 2018 - by Órlaithí Flynn

Sinn Féin MLA Órlaithí Flynn has urged statutory bodies to play their part in improving prison healthcare.

Speaking after meeting with the Director responsible for prison healthcare in the South Eastern Trust, the party’s Mental Health and Suicide Prevention spokesperson said:

“I pressed the South Eastern Trust on the need to continue working to improve prison healthcare services.

“Prison healthcare is the responsibility for every agency involved with the management of prison.

“The prison population suffer from higher health inequalities.

“This year alone we have had a number of tragic deaths in prisons. This causes great heartache and suffering for their families and loved ones as well as the staff and other prisoners.

“We must do all we can to provide hope and support to all prisoners and their families. Sinn Féin has requested an update on the review into vulnerable prisoners by the Department of Health.

“Prison healthcare and services will be at the top of the agenda at the next All Party Group meeting on Suicide Prevention. I will continue to focus minds on improving services for prisoners.”
