No-deal Brexit will bring crisis to meat factories - Martin Kenny TD

20 December, 2018 - by Martin Kenny TD

Sinn Féin Agriculture spokesperson Martin Kenny TD has today called on the Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed to wake up and recognise the crisis coming down the line for the meat industry with a no-deal Brexit.

Deputy Kenny said:

“We see that factories cannot operate to full capacity if vets work their contracted hours. This is unacceptable and has caused farmers to be turned away this week, when contracted vets did not work longer hours to cover the shortage of professionals in the factories.

“However, this is minor compared to the crisis which will come with a no deal Brexit if there are not enough vets employed to handle the new systems which will be necessary in that scenario.

“Minister Creed and the rest of the government have shown themselves to be dangerously under-prepared for no-deal and it is the farmers and consumers of Ireland who will suffer.

"He should wake up and recognise the crisis coming down the line and take measures now to prevent it.”
