The international community is failing Palestine - Mary Lou McDonald

20 December, 2018 - by Mary Lou McDonald TD

This evening Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

The meeting marked the conclusion of  a Sinn Féin delegation to the Palestinian Territories in the West Bank.

Mary Lou McDonald said:

"President Abbas and I discussed the ongoing Israeli occupation of the Palestinian Territories, the ongoing denial of basic human and civil rights to the Palestinian people who endure daily harassment and Israeli aggression.

"The international community is failing Palestine and is complicit in ongoing, flagrant breaches of international law by the Israeli state.

"Palestine has a right to self determination.

"There is an urgent need for the international community to act to ensure that Palestinian rights and statehood are delivered.

"Israel continues with its policy of building illegal settlements. It is in breach of international law. This must stop and action must be taken to call Israel to account.

"Ireland must lead from the front. The Occupied Territories Bill will come before the Dáil in the new year and the government should support this legislation . The Government must also act on the stated will of the Oireachtas and recognise the State of Palestine.

"The relationship between Ireland and Palestine is one of deep and lasting friendship.

"I assured President Abbas of our continued solidarity and our desire to bring new momentum internationally to the Palestinian question.

"Achieving Palestinian self determination and independence is a democratic imperative of our generation."
