Kearney welcomes workers rights initiative
Sinn Fein Workers Rights Spokesperson Declan Kearney has welcomed the workers rights initiative announced by Signature Living Hotels owner Lawrence Kenwright in conjunction with the SiPTU trade union.
In response to the announcement of this initiative, the South Antrim MLA said:
“I want to commend Signature Living Hotels and SIPTU on ensuring that decent working rights will be afforded to all future employees of that company's developments in Belfast.
“With low wages and zero contracts being prevalent in the hospitality sector, this development proves that hotels can and should look to give their workers better working conditions.
“The fact that Signature Living Hotels Group posted profits of nearly £6 million last year whilst not using zero hour contracts proves that businesses can excel by treating their workers more fairly.
“Coming just weeks after Belfast City Council passed a Sinn Fein motion calling for a ban on the use of zero hours contracts, I hope this development will be a template for other hoteliers and businesses as it proves that business success and workers’ rights are not mutually exclusive.”
Signature Living Hotels Group has a number of development interests in Belfast including the new George Best Hotel.
Through negotiations with SIPTU its owner, Lawrence Kenwright, has publicly committed to a series of measures to ensure decent conditions for his future staff.
Signature Living Hotel Group will allow collective bargaining rights, will not use zero hour contracts and pay their staff a minimum of £9 an hour living wage.
