Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD welcomes strengthening of domestic violence laws

2 January, 2019 - by Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD

Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire has welcomed the news that domestic violence laws will be increased to include coercive control and psychological abuse.

Teachta Ó Laoghaire said;

“I want to welcome the expansion of domestic violence laws that come into effect today. Domestic violence is a particularly heinous crime.

“Controlling and coercive abuse takes countless forms, including not only physical violence but also physiological control, dominance as well as demeaning and dehumanising treatment.

“While this is a positive step in tackling domestic and gender based violence, we must go beyond it in terms of the roll out of resources, alongside further legislation.

“It is important that we see the ratification of the Istanbul Convention, to ensure that the protective services unit is properly resourced and we do all we can to stand against domestic violence.

“This Bill cannot just be about changing legislation, it must be about changing culture and giving the Gardaí and Judiciary the capacity to protect women and children and prosecuting those responsible for coercive and controlling behaviour against others.”
