‘Make your voice heard, register to vote online’ - Gildernew

7 January, 2019 - by Colm Gildernew

Sinn Féin MLA Colm Gildernew has encouraged people to ‘make their voice heard’ by registering to vote through the new online registration service.

Colm Gildernew said:

“Online voter registration became available for people in the north in June last year.

“This system makes democracy more accessible and provides new avenues enabling people to exercise their right to vote.

“As we approach the local government elections in May, it’s vital that the democratic deficit, created by the removal of tens of thousands of people from the electoral register, is addressed.

“The Electoral Office should also reinstate the schools registration programme which has the potential to get 10,000 young people every year on to the electoral register.

“I would encourage people to use the online registration service on your smartphone, tablet or PC, it is available at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote and the process only takes five minutes.”
