Disgraceful failures in Roseann Mallon case thwart truth
Sinn Féin MLA Linda Dillon said today it was disgraceful that police had consistently failed to provide evidence demanded by the coroner in the case of Co Tyrone pensioner Roseann Mallon who was murdered by a loyalist death squad.
Linda Dillon said:
“The home of 76-year-old Roseann Mallon was under surveillance by undercover British soldiers and undercover cameras at the time of her brutal murder by the UVF in 1994.
“Throughout the long-delayed inquest into her murder the police consistently failed to provide evidence demanded by the coroner.
“It also emerged that interview notes were destroyed and questions raised whether spent bullet casings were tested for fingerprints.
“Former RUC members refused to engage with the inquiry. It is disgraceful that those supposed to deliver law and order won’t engage with the courts.
"It is also notable that the question about whether Billy Wright was a state agent wasn’t answered as it is also extremely pertinent to the question of collusion in the murder of Roseann Mallon.
“These disgraceful failures prevented the truth emerging about the murder of Roseann Mallon and thwarted efforts to provide justice for her bereaved family.
“Sinn Féin will continue to support the Mallon family in their fight for truth and justice." CRÍOCH/ENDS
