Scourge of fascism must be tackled where it arises - Anderson
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said the scourge of fascism must be tackled wherever it arises across Europe.
Speaking at a GUE/NGL conference on the role the left in Europe in Cyprus, Martina Anderson said:
"For decades the right have tried to vilify the left and tried to undermine it at every turn.
"Meanwhile, the conditions created by austerity, which have driven millions into poverty, have been exploited by the far right and by fascists for their own ends.
"Fascists prey on the concerns people have about austerity but shift the blame to the most vulnerable, to minorities, to refugees and those fleeing conflict.
"It is the architects of austerity who have created these conditions which have provided fertile ground for the rise of fascism and the far right while.
"We can create a better, more social, equal and democratic Europe but another Europe will not be possible if we don't confront, challenge and remove the scourge of fascism."
