International community must act before Gaza becomes uninhabitable - Anderson
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said the international community have an urgent responsibility to act to support the people of Palestine before Gaza becomes totally uninhabitable.
Speaking in Cyprus at a GUE/NGL conference on the Middle East, Martina Anderson said:
“Gaza is the largest open air prison in the world and by next year, as the UN have made abundantly clear, will be uninhabitable.
“Essentials and basic needs, such as medical, educational and food supplies cannot access Gaza.
“Palestinians are prevented from leaving, including those in desperate need of urgent cancer treatment and other healthcare.
“There are actions the international community can take in support of the people of Palestine.
“Recently the Occupied Territories Bill was passed in the Irish Senate which aims to prohibit the import and sale of goods, services and natural resources originating from illegal settlements in occupied territories.
“If more countries adopted such legislation then it would make a real difference and send an important message.
“It is unacceptable for the international community to speak out of both sides of their mouths about upholding law and rights while allowing Israel to act with impunity.
“Palestinians will continue to be killed, have their homes destroyed and have their rights abused and Gaza will become totally uninhabitable unless urgent action is taken.
“They must act now in defence of the Palestinian people and their rights.”
