No deal Brexit would devastate agriculture sector in the North - Gildernew

10 January, 2019 - by Michelle Gildernew

Sinn Féin MP Michelle Gildernew has said a no-deal Brexit would devastate the agriculture sector in the north.

The Fermanagh/South Tyrone MP said:

“Brexit will be a disaster for the farming and agriculture sector in the north but a no-deal Brexit would be catastrophic.

“There is widespread concern among farmers and wider rural communities about Brexit and the impact it will have here.

“The Ulster Farmers Union has now joined with other farming bodies in writing to MPs urging them to avoid a hard Brexit. But the reality is there is no good Brexit for farmers in the north.

“It will limit access to markets, put subsidies at risk, jeopardise food safety and put the future of many farms, particular small farms in doubt.

“The backstop which has already been agreed with the EU and British government must be maintained in order to provide some protection for our farmers from this reckless Tory Brexit agenda.”
