State must stand firm on tax sovereignty - Pearse Doherty TD
Sinn Féin Finance spokesperson Pearse Doherty TD has said the State must stand firm in maintaining the veto over tax moves at EU level. He said attempts by the EU to use Brexit as leverage to push Ireland towards agreeing to end veto powers must be resisted.
Deputy Doherty said:
“Once again it is reported the EU Commission is pushing for an end to tax vetoes at EU Council level. Once again Ireland must say 'No'.
"Brexit will undoubtedly embolden those forces in Brussels who see the veto over tax policy as restraining the EU from moving forwards towards a more federal model.
"Ireland must make it clear to them that Brexit changes nothing as far as the importance of democratic decision making and national economic sovereignty are concerned.
"The rise of the far right across Europe should be heeded by Brussels. Calls for greater centralisation over sensitive issues like tax are only adding fuel to the fire that the far right thrive on.
"Brussels bureaucrats would know this if they removed themselves from the bubble from time to time.
"What is most infuriating about this reported proposal is that the EU Commission knows it does not and will not have the support required to come to pass.
"It is pure political kite flying at a time when the EU should be concentrating on areas where it can help like mitigating the impact of Brexit on the most affected countries like Ireland.”
