Occupied Territories Bill is a blow to Israel’s attempts to normalise illegal occupation – Denise Mitchell TD
Sinn Féin spokesperson for Children and Youth Affairs has said that Ireland must stand up and not allow Israel to normalise its illegal occupation of Palestine
Speaking in the Dáil on the Control of Economic Activity (Occupied Territories) Bill, tabled by Senator Frances Black, Deputy Mitchell said:
“This Bill aims to uphold international law – that is all. It seeks to restrict trade in goods and resources from illegal settlements – and clearly this applies to the ongoing disgraceful actions of Israel in the Palestinian West Bank where it continues to seize land by force, displace Palestinians and commit gross human rights violations."
The Dublin Bay North TD added that as a small nation, this Bill alone was unlikely to suddenly change Israeli Government policy but said it was important for Ireland to stand on the side of international law:
“What this Bill can do is put down a very clear marker that says; The Irish people stand with the people of Palestine, and stand against the Israeli apartheid regime
“The Irish people stand for the international rule of law.
“And the Irish people - who have suffered in our own history from discrimination and land theft – will not allow Israel to normalise its illegal occupation and settlement of the Palestinian West Bank.”
